“Hello My Name Is El Chay”

January 26, 2014
Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church
Sermon Series on “The Names of God”
Sermon 4 of series-
“The Sacred Names of God: El Chay”
Joshua 3:7-13
2 Kings 19:14-16
(All Scripture is from The Names of God Bible)

A reading from 2 Kings 19 verses 14-16…listen for and to the word of God for you and me the people of God:
2 Kings 19:14-16 Names of God Bible (NOG)
14 Hezekiah took the letters from the messengers, read them, and went to Yahweh’s temple. He spread them out in front of Yahweh 15 and prayed to Yahweh, “Yahweh, Elohim of Israel, you are enthroned over the angels. You alone are Elohim of all the kingdoms of the world. You made heaven and earth. 16 Turn your ear toward me, Yahweh, and listen. Open your eyes, Yahweh, and see. Listen to the message that Sennacherib sent to defy Elohim Chay.

Let us pray…Loving and eternal God, giver of all true wisdom and might, we pray for your mantle of wisdom to fall upon us gather here today. May we gain wisdom and insight from your word. We ask that you would open your word to us so that we may catch a glimpse of what you would have us do in and with our lives. Speak to us in ways we will understand. Speak Lord, We are eager to hear your voice…

I love the movie Frankenstein. It makes me laugh to myself when Frankenstein announces ---it’s alive! His “creation” comes to life after he took body parts from all these different people and with a flash of lightning…IT’S ALIVE! Of course what happens after with the “creation” turning out to be more of a “monster” to people doesn’t surprise me. What did he expect trying to do something that only God does right… But there are times when I use Dr Frankenstein’s Exclamation “It’s alive” whe trying to get the girls up in the morning…

This morning we are continuing on our journey as we talk about the “Sacred Names of God” and pray in those very same names. Last week we talked about Elohim, Creator God. It would stand to reason that this week we would talk about El Chay…the Living God… The name El Chay- The Living God- emphasizes God’s role as Creator of all that is, in contrast with idols made of wood and metal or stone which are created by human hands. It sets the God of Israel apart from the gods of the surrounding nations. How do we know we serve the Living God? How do we know He will hear our prayers?

Well the 2nd Kings Scripture from this morning we hear the prayer of king Hezekiah when they when God’s people were threatened by the King of Assyria. Hezekiah knew he served a Living God…El Chay. His God would listen, hear and see what was going on and would stop Sennacherib king of Assyria and Babylonia. El Chay was not like the gods of the people around him…He was the Living God who acted on behalf of Hid people. We too, as Gods people serve a living God and we, like Hezekiah, know that our God is still alive and working things out for His people…what confidence we have to know that our God acts on our behalf.

The inhabitant of the area in which Hezekiah lived worshipped idols instead of El Chay. Talking with the idols made of stone and metal was  and is like talking to thin air… It does no good but when we talk with El Chay…now that’s a different story. El Chay is a living God who sees and hears His children...His worshippers like you and me. We can fulfill our need for worship by bowing down before El Chay, the Living God who transcends culture and time and yet is present with us today. This is the God who created heaven and earth…created you and me in our mother’s womb… who has counted every hair on our heads. He is not the work of our hands but we are the work of His.

Jeremiah 10:3-5 tells us:
“The religion of the people is worthless. Woodcutters cut down trees from the forest. The hands of craftsmen prepare them with axes. Craftsmen decorate them with silver and gold and fasten them together with hammers and nails so that they won’t fall over. These trees are like scarecrows in cucumber gardens. hey aren’t able to speak. They have to be carried, because they can’t walk. Don’t be afraid of them. They can’t harm you. They can’t do you any good either.”

Like in the times of Hezekiah we too have enemies that we must contend with…often these enemies come from the inside verses the outside. There is rage and anger, addiction and depression…situations  that look hopeless. We can’t defeat these on our own…the problem seems so big that we may think it is too large for El Chay to deliver us…but we need to reject that lie…our God is a live and more powerful than anything we could ever come up against..

We have seen it right here at this church how He still continues to be involved in the life of his people and will answer our prayers.  As Hezekiah prayed in trust, we too can pray in that same trust. We have seen, with our own eyes, the deliverance of the Lord in our lives and in the lives of those around us…we have seen marriages renewed…the lost found…we have seen miracles happen when there was no hope.

The 3rd Chapter of Joshua from this morning…the Israelites were entering into a new land. But it was a land that had inhabitants that probably didn’t want to give up their land to the people of God. They had this land for a long time and were not about to give it up to a bunch of foreigners… But they had El Chay with them…they were going to prosper…they were going to take over the land in which the Living God promised them. They had no reason to fear… we too have that same God on our side but we too have those times in which we fear the unknown…fear going to a new land, a new chapter in our faith walk. But as did the Israelites we too are loved and watched over by the same Living God who wants us to have victory in all that we do. The Israelites trust grew as El Chay drove out their enemies and blessed them richly. God continues to drive out our enemies…addiction, fear, hopelessness, brokenness, and brings us to a place of blessings, freedom peace and a sense of purpose.

Throughout Scripture, we see how God’s people trusted in…believed in…the One true Living God of Israel…our God who is still living and breathing to this very day. 2 Corinthians 6:15-16 tells us: “Can Christ agree with the devil? Can a believer share life with an unbeliever? Can God’s temple contain false gods? Clearly, we are the temple of the living God. As God said,
“I will live and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people.” And I will live among them and they will be MY PEOPLE.

WE serve a living, breathing God. Our God continues to act on behalf of His people. El Chay will take those parts within us that are dried out and broken and mold them into something of beauty. El Chay will come to our rescue if we only but ask.  Are you in need of a hero…a knight in shining armor…to come and rescue you not only for your enemies but from yourself as well? Call out to El Chay and He will come and rescue you  from all that ails you. Call out  to El Chay and He will set you free from your prison cell and bring you into a land flowing with milk and honey. Pray in the name of El Chay and be made alive again in our Savior and Friend, Christ Jesus…Yeshua the Christ.

Let us pray…

Lord, You are a God who speaks, who hears, and who acts. Thank you for making us and breathing life into us. Please watch over us and hear us when we cry to You; deliver us from our enemies and glorify Your name so that everyone who knows us may know that You alone are El Chay, the living God. Amen.

“Hello My Name is …El, Elohim, and Eloah”

January 19, 2014
Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church
Sermon Series on “The Names of God”
Sermon 3 of series-
“The Sacred Names of God: El, Elohim, Eloah”
Genesis 1:2-2:3
(All Scripture is from The Names of God Bible)

Have you ever created something that you were just so proud of that you just sat back and thought to yourself “Wow…I can’t believe that I could ever create anything like that? It is so awesome and beautiful…that you God for helping me make this piece of art…!” I love to do beading and I sit there at times…not knowing what I am going to make, I just have to create. So I sit there and try to reason out what I am going to do. Well usually when I do that, it fails to meet what I had in my mind and so I end up taking it apart and starting again. But those days when I just sit there and let God take over what I am doing…let Him create through me…well I just sit back when I am done and am amazed at what the finished product looks like. I know it was not me but God creating within me that got me to this end result. I love to see God create through me and His creating through others just inspires me. God is the ultimate creator even when using others to create a thing of beauty and delicacy. This morning reading from Genesis is all about beauty and splendor…about how God is the Master Creator of all that we see.

Let us pray:
Loving and compassionate God…creator of all we survey...we thank you for the beauty around us and the beauty you create through us. We pray this morning of the beauty of Your wisdom to fall down upon us and that we would glimpse and understand the Word you have for us this day. May we leave this place this day illuminated and ready to share the beauty of Your Son with those who are in need of beauty in their lives. May we be renewed and refreshed by Your Word. Amen.

Today we are continuing on our journey to the heart of God as we learn “The Sacred Names of God” and call upon those names in pray and within our hearts. Last week we learned about Yeshua the Mashiach…Jesus the Messiah as we also celebrated His baptism in the Jordon Rive as well as remembering our own baptism. Today…we begin with water…we begin with chaos…we begin in nothingness…only to come away with beauty and exquisiteness that only God alone can create and recreate. It is all about El…Elohim…Eloah…God! God is a God of the extraordinary…God is a God like none other…God is a God who takes broken and chattered chaos and turns it into a thing of beauty…How awesome is our God.

When we pray to Elohim, we pray and we remember that it was He who crated everything…it was He who began it all. The name El is the One True God or a pagan god named El. But there is no mistaking…when we speak of…pray to…Elohim we are emphasizing on the majesty of the One True God! As a matter of fact the use of Yahew and Elohim translates to “The Lord God”.

You see…everything exists because God wanted it to…you and I exist because God wanted us to exist in this time and space. This is the God, who called forth from nothing and created something. Elohim fearfully and wonderfully made…From Genesis 1:1 we see that God…Elohim… can make a majestic thing….an important thing…a sacred thing out of nothing…out of chaos…out of the chaos and brokenness of our lives…

As you have heard me say many times, everything is of sacred worth. God called everything…let me say that again…everything...good…He even said so after making it. But here’s the kicker…here is the “everyone is of sacred worth thing”…after Elohim created humankind…He exclaimed it was VERY GOOD…as a matter of fact, Elohim created humankind in His own image…you and I bare the image of God. Just think about that for a moment…the image of God…of Elohim…within us. We are the image of Elohim in the world that he created. How does that make you feel? What do you think life would be like if all of humanity took on that ancient sacred call of being the image of God in and to the world that Elohim created through His Ruach…His breathe…and with His spoken word?

We sometimes…OK often…miss life’s beauty because we are too focused on its faults…but then again don’t we do that to ourselves and others…concentrate on the wrong and not look at the goodness…the God given goodness…that is far more present…we would rather complain about cutting the grass than with just enjoying the feel as we walk barefoot through it. I mean even as we look at ourselves…do we see a child of God or someone with many wrongs? (God created and said it was good…very good).

Elohim desires to use His creative power not only to sustain the world but to create a blessed life for you and for me…full of physical and spiritual blessings. Deuteronomy 28:2-6 tells us (and I’m paraphrasing here)
You have blessings abundant if you stay close to Yaweh you Elohim (the Lord Your God). You will be blessed no matter where you are. Your very life will be blessed.
Children
Crops
Animals
And all these will flourish too. Out of the harvest of grain your bread will be blessed. You will always be blessed. Even your barns will be blessed not to mention everything that you do.

We live in a world that is ever changing. We never know from one moment to the next about our world. We even change ourselves as we learn and grow we change for the good…and the bad at times. But…but...Elohim …who created the heavens and the earth…never changes. He was and always will be…He loves you and me and will never stop. Elohim will never stop being who He is…unlike human beings…His attitude doesn’t change with His mood…

We have been promised a life of abundance…an abundance of love…an abundance of joy…an abundance of peace…an abundance of forgiveness…and abundance of blessings. Unlike humanity…Elohim keeps His promises. We as humankind make many promises in our life…children say that they will eat their veggies if we let them have a candy bar first…lovers promise to stay together for better or worse and when the worse comes many bail…salespeople promise us the moon but we all know where that can lead…we are flawed…but He is not.
Beloved children of the most awesome creator Elohim, we have a mighty God who can forge rivers in a dry land…who can take nothing and create a thing of beauty…who can take a broken chaotic life and turn it into something that sings His praise. He is El Elohim the Most High creative God who is just waiting to create new life within His children. He is waiting for His creation to lay down their life on the Potter’s wheel so that it can be molded into a vessel that will hold His Spirit. He wants to bless his children with an abundance of love, forgiveness, peace and joy.

Are you needing to be remolded into who God would have you be? Is there brokenness in your life that needs to be fixed? Are there parts of your life that seem shattered into pieces? Are you needing the Ruach Elohim to breathe through your life again awakening it to the beauty that it truly is? Is the chaos of your life needing Elohim to create a fertile ground for you to stand? Come to the Potter’s Wheel and be remolded into a vessel that will hold the Spirit of the God…that can be poured out onto a hurting world. Bring your hurts…your scars…your brokenness and put them on the altar of renewal and grace. Let the Master Artisan create  the life of beauty that it was meant to be.

Elohim is calling out to you and to me on the winds of love to be renewed with a newness of life. He is calling to you and to me to be that image of God that this “godless”, chaotic world needs to be healed and recreated. He is calling to us… “come my child and be restored to you former self…to the self I always wanted you to be…to that self that you were born with.”

Let us pray…
Elohim, Mighty One, you made everything out of nothing, imposed order out of chaos, gave birth to beauty, and called it good. Help us to know you as the One True God who created everything and everyone, the one who placed us on the earth for a purpose-to magnify Your Name. Come…heal us…recreate us…breath your breath of life onto the chaos of our lives…Elohim, our God and creator.

Amen.

“Hello My Name is …Yeshua/Mashiach”

Sermon 2 of series-
“The Sacred Names of God: Yeshua/Mashiach”
Matthew 1:18-21
Psalm 2
Mark 1:14-20
Matthew 3:13-17
(All Scripture is from The Names of God Bible)

(Start pouring the water) Water…it has so many implications and meanings. It can be life giving and life taking. Water has so much power. When it is held back, we can enjoy a leisurely trip down the river. When it is held back, we can have water to drink from our faucets at home. When it is held back, we can enjoy fishing at our favorite fishing hole. But when it is let loose…then…then we can see its awesome power. When it is let loose we see the devastation of a flood in all its might. When it is let loose we see how a rain storm can ravage a village. How can something that is so life giving be so devastating? It is definitely a force to be reckoned with…

There are many stories in the bible about water, some good and some not so good. Out of the water God created the dry land in the Book of Genesis. Through water, the Israelites were saved from the Egyptian’s in the Exodus story. Out of a rock Moses was able to find life giving water for a thirsty nation. Through the waters of the Jordon River the Israelites entered into the new land. But…but…out of water there came a flood that wiped away almost all of humanity in Noah’s day. Out of water the Israelites enemies, the Egyptians, were drowned in the Red Sea. There are many more stories about water in the bible. It has an important place in God’s grand design. Water is a holy and powerful thing. Water…at times we can’t live with it but more often we can’t live without it.
Let us pray:
Almighty God, the life you birthed in us by baptism into Jesus Christ will never die. Your justice never fails. Your mercy is everlasting. Your healing river flows. Your Spirit blows where you will. We cannot stop you, God! But sometimes we try. We try to block the flow, we redirect the winds of the Spirit, or we walk so far away from the life-giving Stream that we do not hear its sound, and we forget its power. We parch ourselves. We are dry and thirsty, O God. Come, refresh us! Come upon us, Holy Spirit! Come upon these waters. Let these waters be to us drops of your mercy. Let these waters remind us of your righteousness and justice. Let these waters renew in us the resurrection power of Jesus. Let these waters make us long for your coming reign. Most Holy God, Father! Full of Truth and Grace! Glory to you! Jesus Christ, Savior, Lord! Glory to you! Spirit of fire, Spirit over the waters, Spirit of holiness! Glory to you! Eternal God, One in Three and Three in One! All glory is yours, now and forever. Amen!

Today is Baptism of the Lord Sunday in the Christian calendar. It is a day when we remember that baptism that changed all other baptisms to come. It is a day that through water a new era emerged. Through water we are saved. Through water we are adopted. Through water we are claimed. And through water we are freed. But what was so special about that baptism?

The Scripture from Matthew this morning shows us why it was so different.  John knew who Jesus was and that He would bring about a new baptism. It would not be a baptism that just cleanses you with water from your sins but a baptism above all baptisms. This baptism would be one that has never been seen before…A baptism of the Spirit and fire…A baptism that God comes and lives within the baptized person through the Spirit…a baptism that would change all other baptisms. But as I read the passage, the most exciting piece for me is the part when the voice says “You are my Son, chosen and marked by my love, pride of my life.” Yeshua changed everything…you see…as we are baptized…we who follow Yeshua…the Christ…even to this day …God still proclaims “You are my son…you are my daughter, you are chosen and marked…I have claimed you and you are mine…the pride of my life…through this water I have marked you with the seal of my Spirit.”

Who was this man called Jesus…this Yeshua who would become Christ the Messiah…Mashiach ((ms-SHEE-ach)? When we look at the name Yeshua it is not special. As a matter of fact it was a very common name…Barabbas’s first name was Yeshua…They chose this Jesus to set free and Jesus of Nazareth to be put to death. This Yeshua…Jesus…came to save humanity from sin and death not in the way Barabbas did by insurrection but by showing humanity how to live a new life of gentleness and peace. This Yeshua was different…when Jesus was baptized by John…He changed all baptisms to come after Him. Think about a life without this Jesus…without a savior. Can you imagine a world without a savior…how dark it would be without Yeshua…without His light shining in a world of darkness and sin…We are baptized in the name of Yeshua and we are saved…our sins are forgiven through the waters and by His blood. But there is even better news…everyone is invited to the “pool party”… Yeshua is Jesus the Savior.

Yeshua is Mashiach (ma-SHEE-ach) the Messiah…the Christ. Jesus was known as Jesus the Christ…the Messiah now we just call his name Jesus Christ…as if it were His last name…but the two names work together because it is through Jesus we have a Messiah…a champion…that has set us free from all that may harm us…from the chaos in which we live.

Mashiach (ma-SHEE-ach) ®Christ, Messiah…Anointed One set apart for a special mission… There were others that the people thought was their messiah…others they considered to be messiah’s…they were one’s who set the people free…King David was one of them. But Yeshua was a different type of Messiah. He did not take Rome by storm, He showed a more excellent way to live life…He was as gentle as a lamb…He was the Lamb of God who would be the Messiah to free all of humanity.

The name Christ…that was given to Yeshua in Greek meant Messiah or Anointed One. Yeshua was the Anointed One from God and was blessed by God with authority, strength, and honor. But He was not anointed by oil as did others who were set apart…Yeshua was anointed by the Holy Spirit at His baptism. And so are we He was called to heal the rift…to bridge the gap…between God and humanity. Jesus stayed away from the name messiah…the name Mashiach…until just before His death. He didn’t want to take on the political role that He would have had to take because of the name messiah. But this Mashiach solved a bigger problem than Rome…this Messiah was to solve the problem of sin in the world…to set free the captives of sin and death. In a hurting world in need of a Messiah, there is hope in Yeshua the Mashiach…the Christ…the Messiah…the Anointed One…

(Go out into the congregation)
Today is the Baptism of the Lord Sunday, the day when we remember not only Yeshua’s life changing baptism but ours as well. Through water we are saved. Through water we are redeemed. Through water we are given a new life. So when the waters of life seem as if they are about to overtake you…remember your baptismwhen you walk through the waters they will not over take you. When you feel as if you have no one who really cares in your life…remember your baptism…I have claimed you and you are mine. When you feel like an outcast in this journey of life…remember your baptism… Through the waters of baptism we are included in the family of God. Even when your life has taken on the chaos of the world with no end in sight…remember your baptism…be still and know I am God. When others treat you as an outcast and worthless…remember your baptism you are fearfully and wonderfully made. You have been sealed with love…you have been sealed with power…you have been sealed with grace…you have been sealed by the Spirit. Remember your baptism

Amen!

“Our Many Faceted God”

January 5, 2014
Stetson Memorial United Methodist Church
Sermon Series on “The Names of God”
Sermon 1 of “What’s In A Name…”
Exodus 3:13-14
Leviticus 24:10-16
(All Scripture is from The Names of God Bible)

(Show Video of the “Names of God”)

I have heard it said that Eskimo’s have about 400 names for snow. Now that’s a lot of names for one thing. It may be hard to fathom that one thing could have so many names. But then I think about how many names each of us goes by. Sure…my name is Ruth but I have so many other names I go by…:
1.     Pastor Ruth: I am called this by those who God has me shepherd
2.     Mom: Used by my daughters and most of their friends
3.     Honey: Used by my loving husband
4.     Ruth: Used by my mom
…and each name has a unique undertone. The list just goes on. Names sort of explain…they say who you are to the one who is calling you that name. Each name I am called sort of says what “role I am playing” at that time. I am sure that most of you go by more than one name.

Our God also goes by different names at different times depending on what was going on in the life of those who were calling upon His name…depending on how God is viewed at the time of the person calling out His name…what they needed from Him. There are different names that are used when you are calling upon Him for strength…provider…or guidance…or to just be there with the person. As a matter of fact…I think there are about 72 names that the Hebrews called God. Can you believe it…72 different names for one God? By the way, some of the names are for God through Jesus Christ… There is beauty and elegance found in each name of God. As a matter of fact, each of the Names comes with a promise of and from God that is associated with each name.

With that being said, I would like to invite you all on an excavation…a treasure hunt so to speak…this year as we dig up the treasures of God’s Names and the promise that it holds for you and me. For the year 2014, we are going to be looking at the names of God…praying the names of God…understanding the message and promise behind the name. I pray that by doing so, we will all grow in our love and faith of God. I pray our vision of God would grow wider and larger as we begin to understand these sacred names that we may not hear every day but they are not any less important to our understanding of who God is. So let’s begin on our treasure hunt. In the Scriptures from this morning, you heard me use a couple of names that you may not recognize…Ha-shem and Ehyah.

Now the word Ehyah that I used in the Exodus scripture simple means “I Am.” When Moses wanted to be able to tell the Israelites the name of the person who sent him God just said My Name is I Am. Now here is Moses, in front of the burning bush that God used to speak through to him. He has been called to go and free to people from their slavery and the only name he is given is “I Am”. I think that Moses must have felt a little “jipped”. He wasn’t given some long fancy name…nor was he given a name that spoke some kind of power. All he got was “I Am”. Now who would want to put their trust in a person named simply “I Am”? They probably thought that Moses was just making up the name. Their God was supposed to be great so He really should have this great, fantazmalatical name…something like “The All Powerful God Who Rules Over Everything… but it was just simply “I Am”.
So…what’s in a name? This name that Moses gave the Israelites is a name that is so sacred that even Jews today don’t pronounce it…it is and was a deeply sacred and holy name. Now this name not only reveals that God has always been there but it also reveals that God is a God who is always present…He just is. I Am the God who is always with you…you never walk alone; I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life; I Am the true Vine…

The other name that I used this morning in the Leviticus scripture was Ha-Shem which means “the Name.” Now…His…and our…Name is our reputation. God’s reputation was and is one of glory, power, holiness, protection, trust and love. So When you call upon the “Name” of God…Ha-Shem… you call upon His presence…to act in His name is to act with His authority…to fight in His Name is to fight with His power and might…and to pray in His name is to pray to Him…to invoke His name…Ha-Shem. Now invoking His Name is not some sort of magical thing…when men and women of faith call upon His Name…they are exercising their faith in God. When we pray to Ha-shem…we are praying to the holy God who dwells with us, hearing and answering our prayers. When you call me I will answer…Because you know my name I will protect you…I will call upon the name of the Lord and be saved

Beloved Children of God…to know God’s names…to pray God’s names…well it is a privileged access to Him and that piece of Him, to that part of Him. As we pray the Names of God we pray about and to His character…about and to His Very Nature…about and to His very essence. God…by revealing His name…invites each and every believer into relationship with Him. A Close relationship, that we know that special name. But it comes with responsibility…you shall not take the Name of your God in vain. Cursing in His name certainly dishonors His name but by living a life that contradicts His character also is using His name in vain. As we journey together on this treasure hunt for His names…as we look at the many facets of who He is, may we draw ever nearer to His heart and fall more deeply in love with the One who shares His most precious names with His beloved children…our Lord and our God. May we grow in stature as we rediscover the Hebrew names of the One who created heaven and earth.

Let us pray…
Our Great God Ehyah…may we come to understand that You are I Am…the One who was…who is…who will always be. May we come to understand that You are always with us and that we never walk alone because I Am goes with us. May we honor Your Ha-shem…your name in all that we say and do. As we call upon He-shem may You draw ever near to hear and answer. Thank you for protecting us as we sojourn in this world. You truly are the Great and Powerful I Am.

Amen
